ABOUT US

The Philanthropics are a queer-owned consultancy created to support non-profit organizations, individual artists, and small fundraising shops with building an annual fund, creating a pipeline, creating sparkly events, and writing grants that get results. We primarily specialize in building revenue, with a focus on building a solid donor base, engaging in implementing best practices in direct mail, annual fund planning, and closing the gift.

JT Newman, CFRE, has raised more than $30 million for various non-profits throughout their professional fundraising and marketing careers. They have more than 25 years of experience in non-profit management. Obsessed with detail, donor experience, and hospitality, they will make your staff and donors feel like family, make your copy and design sparkle, and increase your bottom line and ROI, all with no-nonsense advice and a focus on making your donors feel valued and connected. Queer-non-binary-and-women-owned. Yum, neurospicy!

FAQs

“Where did you get that name?”

The Philanthropics were the name of the pick-up staff band that used to play at a large, radical social justice foundation where JT worked in the 1990’s.

Did you used to be called something else? Why did you change it?

Yes. Up until 2024, we were known as Sprout Partnerships, There were a number of reasons for the shift, but the most important one was to rock n’ roll-ify the company. You know that feeling that you get when you hear some new music and it changes your perspective on music, itself? That’s what we’re looking to do with fundraising and philanthropy. Also, we wanted to sound cooler.

Are y’all philanthropic?

Yes. We sometimes take on clients for low or no fees, when we believe that they are under-resourced and their values align with ours.

What values are those?

See above. We’re feminist, queer, nonbinary, and neurospicy with a deep belief that most people are good and that some (good) people with means want to use their privilege to help their neighbors and communities thrive.
